The winter is coming and that means one thing, the need to learn some tips to winterize your boat. Winterizing your boat not only gives you added protection from the elements, it also makes for a safer boating experience. Here are some basic tips to help you properly winterize your boat.
Get a Boat Cover – One of the most important tips to winterizing your boat is to get a boat cover. You can either buy one at an auto parts store or any boating store. Boats come with factory covers, but for even more protection, why not invest in a custom cover? Custom covers fit your boat perfectly and are made specifically for the boat’s shape and measurements. If you purchase a standard boat cover, make sure you measure your boat’s dimensions before you buy the cover so that you can get a perfect fit.
Remove All Fridges – It’s extremely cold out and even though the engine is running, it’s nearly possible that the engine can overheat and smoke. Make sure that you remove all fridges inside and out of the boat. After removing all the fridges, you should run a fan and change the air filters if necessary. Be sure that your passengers are dressed accordingly to protect themselves from heat as well.
Put On A Boat Cover – After winterizing your boat, you should also put on a full size boat cover to help keep out any debris, water, and bugs. To be extra careful, tie a string around the door to your boat, especially near the rear. This way, if there is a sudden downpour of water, you will not have to struggle in the dark to get your boat inside. Be sure that the boat cover stays tight against the body of the boat.
Decorate The Area With Liners And paints – You can cover the interior walls, floor, and the seats of your boat with thick blankets, or paint. There are different types of paints available at your local hardware store or home improvement center. Liners, which are like waterproofing paints, can be bought in rolls and applied to the walls using special tools. They can be used to make everything look brand new even after the boat has been stored for several months.
If you follow the tips to winterize your boat, you will find that you are able to use it more often after the initial cold weather. Just make sure that you do everything to the books when you are storing your boat. After the initial storage, you can start using your boat again, hopefully for many trips.
